Pathways Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program Provides a Positive Impact on the School Age Care Program

The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program offers students in grades 10-12 an educational opportunity to work with children ages 5-12 in a Pathways classroom. For those high schoolers interested in a career in education, it provides hands-on training in a supervised environment. It is coordinated by Pathways’ staff: Teo Lopes, School-Age-Care (SAC) Manager, and Kathy Wilson, Volunteer Coordinator.

“There are requirements prior to beginning as a CIT,” said Kathy. “CITs must commit to their scheduled hours and complete training sessions.” Pathways offers a stipend, but some high schools do not allow paid opportunities, instead offering credits or volunteer hours for participation.

One of the outstanding qualities CIT students have demonstrated is their investment in curriculum development. They actively engage in crafting educational plans that are not only age-appropriate but also cater to the unique needs of the program. This proactive approach enriches the learning experience for Pathways students. Moreover, the CIT's dedication supports team leaders before and during field trips by helping to plan trips and then demonstrating a high level of responsibility and team spirit during the trips.

“The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program had a significant and positive impact on our School Age Program, particularly during the school year,” said Teo. “The dedication and enthusiasm of individuals in the CIT initiative, as seen in Jenna Church (photo above), have been instrumental in shaping a positive and engaging environment for our children.”

Working in the CIT program offers opportunities for growth! Some students, like Aryanna Roderick, transitioned from the CIT program to working as a valuable members of Pathways’ permanent team. The enthusiasm, fresh perspectives, and dedication of the CITs have not only improved the overall quality of our program but have also created a nurturing environment for both staff and children.
