Give back to caregivers in need of support.
Looking to share your time, kindness, and skills?
Parent Mentors are community volunteers who want to form a friendship with, and act as a role model to parents who may be isolated or face certain challenges.
They work to establish trust and enable goal-setting to ultimately provide the stepping stones to self-sufficiency and self-confidence.
Our Parent mentors are caring, consistent (meeting once a week), nonjudgmental, compassionate, responsible, and trustworthy.
THE ROLE OF THE PARENT MENTOR:
Provide a friendly, supportive, consistent presence in the life of a parent for one year through weekly visits, telephone contacts, and by introducing them to activities, resources, and/or networks that will reduce their isolation and provide additional opportunities.
Share a life skill, if relevant.
Listen and learn from the parent without being judgmental or directive.
Introduce parents to positive communication, realistic, age-appropriate expectations of their children, and positive disciplinary techniques through weekly conversations and community parent education/support group opportunities.
Actively participate in monthly group supervision meetings and contact staff support as needed.
